Sunflower Oil: Types, Grades and Applications

September 29, 2026

Understanding Sunflower Oil Varieties

Sunflower oil is one of the most widely traded vegetable oils globally, valued for its light flavor, high vitamin E content, and versatile applications. For B2B buyers, understanding the different types and grades of sunflower oil is essential for matching the right product to specific market needs.

This guide covers the three main sunflower oil varieties, international grading standards, and commercial applications.

Three Types of Sunflower Oil

1. Linoleic Sunflower Oil (Traditional)

The original sunflower oil variety, rich in polyunsaturated linoleic acid (omega-6). It contains approximately 65-70% linoleic acid and 15-20% oleic acid. Traditional sunflower oil is widely used for general cooking, salad dressings, and margarine production. It has good nutritional value but lower oxidative stability compared to high oleic varieties.

2. Mid-Oleic Sunflower Oil (NuSun)

Mid-oleic sunflower oil contains approximately 55-65% oleic acid and 25-35% linoleic acid. This balanced fatty acid profile offers improved frying stability compared to traditional linoleic oil while maintaining a favorable nutritional profile. It is increasingly popular for commercial frying and food manufacturing.

3. High Oleic Sunflower Oil

High oleic sunflower oil contains 80% or more oleic acid (monounsaturated fat). It offers exceptional oxidative stability, extended fry life, and longer shelf life without hydrogenation. This makes it the preferred choice for premium frying applications, snack manufacturing, and health-conscious consumer products.

International Grading Standards

Sunflower oil is graded based on refining level and quality parameters:

  • Grade 1 (Premium Refined): FFA ≤ 0.1%, PV ≤ 5 meq/kg, light color, neutral taste. Suitable for retail and premium food applications.

  • Grade 2 (Standard Refined): FFA ≤ 0.2%, PV ≤ 10 meq/kg. Suitable for general cooking and food processing.

  • Crude Sunflower Oil: Unrefined, FFA typically 1-3%. Used as raw material for refining or industrial applications.

All grades should meet Codex Alimentarius standards for heavy metals, pesticide residues, and contaminants.

Commercial Applications

Different sunflower oil types serve distinct market segments:

  • Retail Cooking Oil: Refined Grade 1 in PET bottles (1L, 1.5L, 5L)

  • Commercial Frying: High oleic or mid-oleic in bulk drums or flexitanks

  • Food Manufacturing: Ingredient for snacks, bakery, sauces, and margarine

  • Salad Dressings: Traditional linoleic oil for emulsified products

  • Health Products: High oleic oil for nutritional supplements
